'Billows' is a three quarter decked centreboard gaff sloop, built in 1938 by HJ Phillips & Sons of Rye in Sussex as a sailing tripper boat. Her construction is typical beach boat with clinker silver spruce planking on grown oak floors joggled to fit the planking, steamed timbers above to the sheer. She has long bilge runners and stringers and a long heavy centreboard case with wrought iron board.
Dimensions are LOA 21' Beam 6' 10" draft 18" to 4'6" board down. Sail area is about 200 sq ft. Auxiliary power is provided by a 3.5 hp Tohatsu 4 stroke outboard that fits in a well, or a pair of spruce sweeps. She is fitted with a boom tent for camping, and a 2 burner gas cooker with bottle in an outboard vented locker.
During a recent refit, the centreboard case was replaced, as was all the deck structure from the sheer strake up virtually everything has been replaced. Below the sheer she is 90% original. She has never needed refastening, this in unusual but she was pickled in linseed oil when built and during the restoration.
'Billows' was the last such boat built by Phillips of Rye which almost certainly makes her one of the last sailing workboats built on the South Coast. She has little in common with the fishing luggers apart from her similar construction; rather she seems to be descended from the fast rowing galleys & punts of the area now all but extinct. It is unknown if she ever worked but she apparently spent the war years on the Medway. Unlike most of her sisters she seems to have escaped the hard life of the beach and spent most of her life in the soft mud of the Essex creeks.
She is a fine looking boat with a bold sheer and lovely lines. According to the owners, she is a lovely boat to sail being fast and responsive, yet very dry and well mannered.
'Billows' is ashore outside of our offices, but we doubt she will remain there for long as she is likely to be snapped up quickly! Early viewing is therefore recommended.
