COCKPIT:

The cockpit is the lifeblood of any fine cruising yacht. This is where you spend 90% of your time on board. You need comfort, convenience, and easy access to all the yacht’s systems for smooth sailing. Hunter has mastered the sailing cockpit. Long benches and seatbacks are perfect for comfort when heeled on an athletic day of sailing. They’re also great for napping or sleeping under the stars. The center helm and large folding leaf cockpit table are the focal point of the cockpit. The two large folding leaves of the table offer comfortable dining space for four. Everything you need to sail the boat, single-handed or with crew, is right at your fingertips without leaving the cockpit. The Raymarine radar and chart plotter is located right at the helm for easy navigation along with the Raymarine autopilot. The multifunction stainless steel arch accommodates the mainsail traveler, mainsheet, bimini, and cockpit speakers. Having all of that up and out of the way declutters the cockpit beautifully and further enables solo sailing if desired. With minor help from the autopilot, you barely have to leave the helm to sail this yacht. Carrying so much beam aft, Hunter has perfected the swim platform area of their yachts. Wide, open, easy to access, the cockpit has become an integral part of your time aboard.

SAILS AND RIGGING:

This yacht is designed with the ultimate in simplicity in mind. The Selden in-mast furling rig is SO simple to handle. A continuous loop line on the port side cabin top with stoppers and dedicated winch makes furling and unfurling the main a piece of cake. The 110% jib is controlled by a furling line to starboard at the base of the stainless steel arch. Single-handing is so easy with the autopilot helm and winches right at the cabin top. Once away from the dock, set the autopilot into the wind, head forward in the cockpit to pull out the main, head back to the helm and you’re all set for a blissful day of cruising.

  • UK Sails furling main sail

Hunters interior layout design gets it right by putting a head that is right where it needs to be – right at the base of the companionway steps. It is a mostly fiberglass space with very little teak so it is very easy to keep clean and new looking. It’s a functional space with separate vanity and shower stall. The head has great ventilation with an overhead opening hatch and side opening port. There is also great headroom space.

  • Large head with designated shower space

Hunter builds a thoughtful yacht, from the bow all the way to the stern. Up forward, the headsail furler is close to the deck for performance sailing. The large anchor locker will accommodate any chain/rode configuration you desire. The decks are nice and wide. The sheets and halyards all lead back to the cockpit for easy single-handed sailing.

The factory electrical system was replaced in March 2013 to provide a high capacity House Battery Bank and a separate Engine Battery with battery monitoring. The system was provided and installed by Marine Electric Systems and included the following components and features:

  • 2 Northstar Energy 1 NSB M12-210 AGM batteries House Bank (420 amp-hr capacity)

DAVE and ERIN'S RATING

When we travel with clients FAR out of town for yachts, we don't like surprises when we get there. It's embarrassing for us and can make for an expensive trip. With that in mind, we'd like to share our rating of various systems on the boat so you'll be as informed as possible before you come for a visit. Our rating system is on a 1-10 scale with 10 being 'perfect' (in OUR opinion). Please view this list as a GUIDE only. Everyone's idea of good and bad can vary quite a bit. Our goal in doing this is to help you reach a comfort level with the boat before you invest time and energy to come and see it. We'll summarize by saying that this appears to be an excellent yacht worthy of serious consideration.

Beyond telling you what’s great about a yacht, don’t you also want to know what it needs next? Every yacht, no matter how turnkey, needs something. Every owner has next year’s list of ‘to-do’s, right? We’ll also include in this section what Erin and I think the boat could use to take her from nearly perfect to ‘voyage-ready’ for your next adventure.

Overall Rating: 9.0/10

Extremely well maintained and thoughtfully updated, the hull both above and below the waterline is in excellent shape. The overall layout of the boat, both above and below decks, is really well configured for long range cruising as well as living aboard for days long or multi-week trips. Hunter is known for one of the friendliest cockpits for cruising and anchoring in the business.  Tons of seating for crew and guests.  Visibility is excellent from the helm. The H356 is one of Hunter's best and longest running models going back to the year 2000.  Her predecessor, the Hunter Legend 35.5, goes even further back into the late 80's. You know they got it right when a manufacturer has such an incredibly long production run. Stepping aboard, it’s clear these owners have been very conscientious and have kept up with maintenance as required. She accelerates well in light air and keeps her composure as the wind builds. We took her out for a shake-down cruise and were very impressed with both her performance and condition.

Exterior: 9.5/10

Having cruised extensively ourselves, we’re looking for several ‘zones’ of success in a sailing yacht. The most important space is the cockpit and on deck because that’s where we plan to spend the most time.   The cockpit on UNFURLED is deep and comfortable. The coamings are tall and sturdy for good bracing while healed, providing excellent comfort and safety. Movement into and out of the cockpit to the decks or down below is easy even in rough seas. The hatch opening to spaces below is large enough that when you and crew are both above and below decks, you’re well within sight and earshot of each other at all times. For entertaining, guests can be both in and out of the boat and still feel together. EVERYTHING you need to manage the boat underway is right at your fingertips or just a step or two away -- critical characteristics for extended cruising and time aboard

  • Comfortable protected cockpit with easy access to gear and decks
  • Wide fiberglass decks with great access to rig and systems on deck
  • Exterior canvas all in very good shape (dodger/bimini connector piece isinglass needs replacement soon)
  • Exterior canvas remains serviceable – should last for a while yet
  • Sails are original and in excellent shape, serviced regularly at the loft
  • Handling the in-mast main and roller furling head sail from the cockpit is fantastic
  • Hull & decks washed/compounded/waxed yearly and holding up extremely well

Interior: 9.0/10

Hunter is really well known for spacious interiors that just work. Berths are easy to access. The galley has ample cabinet space and storage. The main salon seats several people comfortably. There’s plenty of natural light, great ventilation, and easy access to interior mechanical systems.

  • See the photos!  She's amazingly well preserved by her super-conscientious owner
  • Inviting salon seats a bunch of people and is open to the chef’s galley
  • The aft owner's stateroom is a palace spanning the entire stern of the yacht
  • Storage is available everywhere you look
  • Large opening hatches great ventilation and good natural lighting throughout the boat
  • Skylights abound as well for tons of natural light
  • Engine access is incredible (the engine cover can be completely removed for 360 degree access to engine and transmission)

Electronics/Electrical Systems: 9.0/10

Nicely laid out, and efficiently installed, UNFURLED’s systems cover all the basics. The Raymarine color radar/chart plotter at the helm is bright and ergonomically friendly and has the Raymarine ST60 series depth, wind, speed, and autopilot right there together. The Raymarine autopilot worked smoothly in some choppy seas during our test run.  This Hunter has electronics that are great for sailing the bay!

  • All the necessary gear is at the helm where you need it: chart, autopilot, depth, speed, wind
  • The electrical 12V system on this boat has been completely reconfigured for extended cruising

Engine Room: 9.0/10 (visual inspection only)

Awesome access! Universal diesel has been regularly maintained. Relatively low hours for her vintage.  Owner has constantly maintained engine and has supporting service records.

Galley/Head Systems: 9.5/10

I’m a chef and this is chef’s galley for sure. Great counter space. Fantastic fridge space. Storage compartments and spaces are thoughtfully laid out for maximum efficiency and DEEP. We like that the galley is out of the way of passage through the yacht. The chef does not impede traffic flow through the boat. The head is smartly configured and easy to use.

Rig & Sails: 8.5/10

The original sails are in outstanding condition and should have many years of life left. They are removed each season, examined/serviced at a loft as necessary and stored indoors for 6 months out of the year. Remember that these sails have never left the Chesapeake Bay so they’ve had a very gentle life thus far. We easily accelerated up into the 6-7 knot range in just over 10 knots of wind, a testament to Hunter’s sail plan and rig configuration.  The larger main and smaller working jib help make tacking up wind so simple.  The stainless arch which accommodates the mainsheet and traveller arrangement so the cockpit remains uncluttered and the sail plan very easy to manage.

MANUFACTURER'S DESCRIPTION

The Hunter 356 features a tall, fractional rig, which is a direct descendent of the B&R rig that powered Hunter's Child to a second place finish in the recent BOC. Hunter has engineered the mast to carry less weight aloft with smaller sections. This is accomplished by utilizing swept-back spreaders and reverse diagonals as well as mast support struts. This combination provides superior strength without a backstay and increases the stability at the same time. By using a large roach main as the power sail, Hunter has eased the effort in sail handling and allowed for real versatility for all wind and sea conditions. The benefit is better performance with less effort. The deck layout of the Hunter 356 reflects the innovation that accompanies the rig. An integrated arch protects the cockpit from snapping main sheets and blistering sun with the optional Bimini. This arch keeps the cockpit clear and open. A custom console stands ready with the standard VHF and instruments. Single-lever control and a fold-down table along with engine instrumentation complete the command station. The swim platform and walkthrough transom complete with shower and folding ladder are perfect for water sports or for boarding the tender. Storage is everywhere and the non-skid is absolutely first-rate. Comfort is truly important aboard whether for a week or a year, so Hunter has created an interior that not only looks good, but works as well. Two private, large staterooms along with an enormous head with shower and a salon that can seat eight plus a gourmet galley will keep all the crew happy.
