Red Sun III _ Beneteau Oceanis 45
Currently located in Isla Mujeres, Yucatan, Mexico.
Red Sun is a Beautiful Three-Cabin/Two-Heads Oceanis 45. A one-owner vessel, she was customized for ocean sailing and has been carefully maintained since her launching in December 2012. It was built to 2013 specifications and includes a list of options and equipment chosen for efficient sailing performance. Red Sun can sail at 2/3 of the speed of the wind on most points of sail. Without effort, she exceeds 10 kts on a16 kt breeze.
The bright owners’ suite, located forward, is separated from the common area and includes a queen-size double berth and a full bathroom with electric toilet and shower; it has ample storage space, including a spacious hanging locker, shelves and a large storage drawer under the queen-size berth. The cabin has three overhead hatches and side windows on both port and starboard, provided with screen shades.
The salon, bright and elegant, includes a spacious dining area on the starboard side and a separate settee and a navigation table on the port side. The area is furnished with a rosewood dining table and seating for six people. The seats include storage space underneath.
Aft from the dining area, to starboard, there is a second bathroom, and on the port side there is an L-shaped galley that includes a fridge, a top-loading freezer, a propane stove with two burners and oven, as well as plenty of storage space for dishes and kitchen utensils.
Aft from the galley is the access to the port-side guest cabin. On the opposite side, aft from the dining area there is a second full bathroom, with separate access doors from the common area and from the starboard-side aft cabin. The two aft cabins, equal in size and comfort, include a queen-size berth and ample storage space.
The salon, which includes a bar and abundant storage space, is very bright, illuminated by an overhead hatch and lateral windows. The salon, galley and navigation area are provided with recessed LED lights, includes ceiling lamps and reading lights.
The galley, located to port, features a front-loading fridge, a top-loading freezer, a gimballed Force 10 stove and oven, and a microwave oven. It also includes dual stainless steel sinks with hot & cold water, and storage cabinets above & below the Corian countertops.
Outside, the boat features a clean upper deck and a spacious cockpit equipped with dual steering stations. The cockpit configuration provides complete view of the sea under all conditions and instant access to all instrument readings from three independent monitor screens and two magnetic compasses.
The cockpit has abundant seating space, with a 16-foot bench at the rear and two 6’ benches (port and starboard) forward of the steering stations. A unique feature of the Oceanis 45 is the electric transom that converts to a large swim platform, including a swim ladder. A shower head with hot and cold water is accessible from the open swim platform.
The cockpit includes a mainsail arch that contains the mainsail rig and keeps it overhead, clear of the cockpit and provides support for the custom dodger. The dual helm stations, with leather-covered stainless wheels, provide a protected, comfortable and a clear view for the skipper under all sailing conditions.
The winch configuration is chosen for comfort and efficiency. The Genoa winches, located at each side, just forward from the twin helm stations, are Harken 50, two-speed winches. The top deck winches include an electric Harken 900 Unipower on port, and a smaller, 2-speed Harken 40 on the starboard side. This allows the port-side power winch to support the operation of any of the three manual winches. The anchor windlass (provided with a remote control) is also power driven.
The Beneteau Oceanis 45 comes in two versions, one with a conventional rig and one with a furling main. Red Sun has the furling main option, which makes sail handling easier when sailing short-handed, without any loss of sailing performance. Further technical details on the rig, and a wealth of information on the vessel can be obtained directly from the Beneteau website. The company does a good job in describing the vessel.
The current Oceanis 45 hull design, is a considerable departure from conventional hull designs, and achieves a perfect balance between performance and comfort. It results in a spacious and elegant, yet very fast sailing boat.
Red Sun has been only lightly used, which is reflected on the excellent condition of the boat and the very low engine hours. It was delivered on December 2012, and it was built to meet the 2013 design standards. During her young life Red Sun has been carefully maintained and sailed.
