  4. Hatteras Yachtfisherman

    San Carlos Sonora, Mexico
    1967
    $131,509

We have converted "Imagine" from a moderately fast Yachtfisherman to a boat that has more in common with a trawler than a fast power boat. She was originally a 50 foot boat; however, shortly after she left the factory, the cockpit was extended five feet (we've been told that the conversion was licensed by Hatteras). This added space is perfect for fishing, diving and extended cruising. In 2003, the original 8-V71's were replaced with two new, smaller John Deere, 150 HP, turbo-charged diesels (currently at 1300 hours) with ZF gears. The new engines were a huge improvement over the old Detroits. Her speed has been reduced but she is much quieter, fuel efficient (occasionally we get 3 NMPG at 7 knots) and easy service. There are two seperate stand-up engine rooms. One 50 gallon, aluminum day tank has been installed in each engine space. A built-in fuel transfer and filtering system was also installed with the engines. During the refit (2004/2005), the boat was essentially turned into a trawler with emphasis on simplicity and efficiency. Each engine is equipped with an aluminum pan to catch any oil or coolant leaks. Solar panels have significantly reduced genset running time (genset hours is less than 500 hours).      She has cruised extensively from San Francisco to Cabo San Lucas, explored all of the Channel Islands off California, cruised most of the islands off the Pacific Coast of Baja and most of the islands in the Sea of Cortez, including Isla San Pedro Martir, a small, remote island 70 miles north of Guaymas and virtually in the middle of the Sea. She has explored the coast of Baja from Cabo San Lucas in the south, to Isla Angel de La Guarda in the north. She has also cruised extensively along the coast north of Guaymas, Mexico.      The flopper-stoppers were designed to be used at anchor. They are effective and have made untenable anchorages reasonably comfortable. They were purposely overbuilt and can easily be modified to function as active paravanes to reduce roll underway.      She has plenty of room to fish, dive and cruise. She is an extremely comfortable live aboard boat. Even if you elect not to cruise, she makes a comfortable second home for Snow Birds. She is currently moored in Marina Real, San Carlos, Mexico (not far from Guaymas). She is the perfect boat for the Sea of Cortez and the entire Pacific Coast from Alaska to Central America. A passage through the Panama Canel opens up the Caribbean and the East Coast of the States. She was not originally designed--or modified--to cross oceans.      A recent (January 2018) survey shows a market value of $105,000. The slip fees at the marina are $577 a month, and she is currently moored to the best slip in the marina. There is no sales tax in Mexico for US vessels sold to US citizens.      Fresh bottom paint was applied in January, 2018.      A 12 volt, Village Marine water maker (Little Wonder) is aboard. A low-pressure boost pump and new membranes are needed for it to be functional; however, with 350 gallons of fresh water, we have found that a water maker is not necessary for coastal cruising. The flying bridge needs new shift cables to be fully functional. We have chosen to operate exclusively from the lower station.      Advancing age, which has made performing routine maintenance more difficult, has--sadly--made it necessary for us to sell.
