Description:
Pronounced 'challuk' these barges were originally sailing boats with engines added later. Their shape makes for roomy conversions with bulbous bows and stern. The wide beam and flat bottom which runs full width to nearly the bow and stern give a large displacing surface area. The initial stability of these barges is phenomenal. They were very stiff under sail. Even flying full sails in a stiff breeze the angle of the boat varies only very slightly. This large area gives the tjalk much bouyancy and it is essential to ballast thems well to avoid too much 'skating'. They were originally fitted with leebords either side to avoid too much leeward slipage when sailing. They were also usually very well loaded when used as cargo boats, and so skating is a phenomen found since tjalks have been converted for pleasure use. 'Kornella' has been stripped back internally to her bare hull and has had some plating work carried out on her hull as well as having her superstructure painted in primer.
