“Dragons Lair” is a Full Displacement 68’ Custom Motor Yacht built in steel. Launched in July 2003, she was built as a tough no-nonsense ocean going vessel with long range capability. Fitted with sensible seagoing systems, an extensive specification, and with a very comfortable interior fit-out suited for extended cruising and living aboard, she epitomises the “gentleman’s yacht”. She is, in all senses, a real little ship with a Full Load Displacement of 88 tonnes.
The design gives a sensible sea kindly displacement hull. Her underwater profile has a deep forefoot with a classic fishing trawler profile. Twin bilge keels allow the yacht to be beached, protect the propellers and provide lateral stability in running conditions. They also are effective in reducing rolling particularly at anchor. The twin rudders are mounted at the aft end of the keels immediately behind the propellers.
The hull has been thoroughly tank tested at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou ship testing facility by the designer Thanos Condylis. When new the hull was capable of 11 knots with Caterpillar 3406C slow revving 1350 rpm heavy-duty engines. The hull has been built with certified marine grade BS43A steel that continues to the upper boat deck.
The pilothouse complete with Portuguese deck was built with laminates preimpregnated with epoxy resin and vacuum bagged. This gives a very strong assembly and is fitted with toughened tinted glass windows. Alt round visibility is excellent. Three doors give access to bridge wings and the boat deck. A fridge is fitted under the settee.
On deck, fittings are stainless steel. An oversize windlass, a capstan aft and a Nautical Structures crane are provided. Twin Caterpillar engines are standard as is a Kohler generator and ruggedly built systems. Engines are flexibly mounted with ZF gearboxes, driving Aquamet shafts through Centa flexible couplings and fitted with Nibral propellers.
Kobelt steering and electronic engine control systems are fitted. This yacht is also fitted with Naiad stabilisers powered by a hydraulic system that supplies the necessary power to the anchor windlass, capstan and the 20hp bowthruster.
Sea water systems derived from a large easily cleaned sea chest. Exhaust systems are wet and incorporate a water separation system, discharging water below the waterline and relatively clean exhaust above. A comprehensive fuel system allows fuel transfer and scrubbing and utilises both Racor paralleled oil/water separators and Gulf Coast filters.
Flectrical system is from Victron with a shore supply. Cables are marine tinned copper Lloyds approved and oversized breakers from BEP in New Zealand. A comprehensive panel and alarm system is installed.
The interior accommodation accent is understated comfort and with easy to clean surfaces. Superb satin varnished hardwood doors, drawers and trim against a light off white background gives the yacht an Edwardian atmosphere.
Leather appointments to the wheelhouse, Alcantara leather finishes to main saloon and master cabin, contribute to a restrained elegance. All passage and locker doors are raised and fielded with traditional styles. Standard hardwood finish is in solid cherry. Lighting and door furniture is from Italy, domestic equipment, faucets and mixers are made by Gneisdorf of Germany.
On the lower deck there is an aft master cabin separated from the rest of the accommodation by the engine room. This cabin has a queen size double with on suite heads and shower compartment. Forward there are two guest cabins, both double beds. Both cabins have en-suite heads with showers. Forward is a crew cabin with twin “up & over” berths, a head and shower and clothes storage.
The engine room runs full beam, has standing headroom and access from the aft cabin lobby and from the side deck.
The main deck has two lounge seating areas, one forward and one aft of the central galley with access to the deck and a day head in between. The galley is comprehensively fitted with well known branded equipment and has a large serving hatchway to the dining area aft.
On the upper boat deck is an enclosed pilothouse with Portuguese bridge
The pilothouse has forward sloping 12mm Lloyds approved windows giving superb vision ahead. The boat deck is fitted with a large teak entertainment table and a railed off space for“toys” and a Nautical Structures electrically operated crane of 360kg capacity. A specially designed “telescoping” stainless steel bimini structure protects the entertainment area.
The yacht was built under the supervision of the Naval Architect Thanos Condylis and Lloyds Register of Shipping to their BCC compliance certification.
