Owners Comments

KJEMPEKJEKK (KJ) Maxi 33

We fell for KJ the moment we saw her. She was in a cradle ashore at St Germans, near the navigable head of the Lyhner river, east Cornwall. A month later she was ours and we sailed her round to our home at Polruan, across the river from Fowey.

The first few years we sailed around the West Country - Devon, Dorset, Cornwall and Scilly, with occasional trips to North and South Brittany and the Channel Islands. In 2003 we signed up for the ARC and in August that year we sailed via the Spanish rias to Portugal. Thence from the Algarve to Porto Santo, Madeira and the Canaries.

We departed Las Palmas with the ARC in late November and arrived in St Lucia after 23 mostly uneventful days. In May 2004, after 5 months cruising the Windward and Leeward Islands we set off north to Bermuda. From there it took us 14 days sailing to the Azores and following a stay of several weeks KJ arrived safely back in Fowey after a 12-day passage.

Two years later we set off again, this time to visit the BVIs / Bahamas and perhaps further north. Sadly, while passing down the Portuguese coast we received news of family issues which compelled us to abort the trip. We put into Lisbon to fly home for a few weeks, then returned to take KJ down to Lagos for the winter.

In late March 2007 we headed back to Fowey. There was time to do something different so we sailed east towards Cadiz and Gibraltar. After a visit to Ceuta in N Africa we returned north to the Spanish Costas then eastwards to Sete, France. Here, the mast was taken down and we entered the Caneaux du Midi. After 2 weeks we emerged onto the Garonne and La Gironde, stopping at Pauillac to re-step the mast. The following day we made it to Royan where we paused for a couple of days.

Next port was Les Sables d’Olonne for a night stop. Then on to Lorient, Audierne and finally journey’s end at Fowey – 3 days ahead of our original plan.

Family issues held our focus until September 2012. We had intended to haul KJ ashore a month earlier than usual, however friends sailing in Scilly called us. They said it was beautiful with plenty of space and we should join them. The following day, as we were about to set off from Polruan we checked the weather and found it was good.

Some things change rapidly – two weeks later we arrived in Lagos, Portugal. We based KJ there for the next 8 years, regularly sailing the coast between Cape St Vincent and Gibraltar. In fact we became 50/50 liveaboards, spending roughly equal periods aboard KJ and at home. For 6-weeks of the busy summer months we got KJ lifted ashore in the boatyard at Lagos while we flew home to catch up with family.

But the trials of seniority are now catching up with us; arthritis and the big C to name but two. Right now we both seem to be doing alright, however it is definitely time to accept what the future might hold in store for us and move on. But KJ should keep on doing what she does best and for that she needs a new skipper and crew. Of course, we will be sad to see her go. She has looked after us through so many adventures and we’ve never lost confidence in her.
