Owner wants offers!

The Gozzard 44 MKII is a superb world cruiser that will appeal to traditionalists unwilling to sacrifice performance and comfort to own a beautiful yacht.  Procyon is hull number 19 and a Mark II version of the 44 series.   The Mark II’s keel is shorter in length to create more lift and decrease wetted surface.  Deadwood between the keel and rudder was minimized while still retaining a full skeg to protect both propeller and rudder.  The deeper, more efficient rudder provides easier and more responsive steering.  The cutter rig spreads ample canvas for light air performance and is kept manageable with all sails and control lines led aft to the cockpit and a dedicated furling line electric winch.  Protection from the elements is one of the most important considerations for a cruising yacht.  The large aft cockpit with windshield, dodger, and full enclosure (All New in August 2014) provide sanctuary in good and lousy weather.  There is just enough exterior bright work for a proper yacht appearance without making the owner a varnish slave.  Design and construction detail are very evident and a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans and craftsman at Gozzard Yachts.

Equipment has been upgraded regularly including new sails in 2011, new standing rigging and roller furling in 2014, new asymmetrical headsail in 2014, new canvas in 2014, new Fisher Panda GenSet in 2015, and many other updates.

Accommodations

The companionway ladder descends five steps from the cockpit to the interior of Procyon.   The companionway is under the dodger and behind the windshield thus being well sheltered.   The ladder is easy to use and is more a stairway than a vertical ladder.  The banister is solid cherry with dolphin carvings and provides a secure handhold to starboard.  A fore and aft bulkhead is to port and makes this companionway stable and safe in a seaway.  Stained glass, hinged companionway doors and an overhead slider close off the interior when desired.  A wood-framed hinged and sliding screen keep insects outside and allow for ventilation.  Storm drop in boards are also provided for the companionway.

All interior joinery is North American Cherry and finished with a satin varnish.  All lockers and doors are louvered for ventilation.  The cabin sole is solid teak and basswood – not veneer and is finished with a high gloss urethane varnish.  All hanging lockers are cedar lined.  The cabin overhead is gloss white fiberglass panels held in place by cherry battens, which are removable for access and maintenance.  Two large stainless steel opening deck hatches and numerous opening cabin side ports provide ventilation and natural light.  The overhead hatches are fitted with hinged, wood-framed screens.  Removable screens are also provided for all opening ports.

There is ample storage in many lockers, cabinets, drawers and bins.  Overhead and task lighting are well-placed and adequate for nighttime navigation and live aboard ease.  The upholstery in the salon, dinette and navigation station settee is dark blue Ultraleather (new in 2007)

Procyon has the Gozzard “A” interior arrangement with some modifications.  Starting forward is a full beam hanging and storage locker.  A “U” shaped dinette converts to either two individual bunks or a full beam single bunk.  The centerline table shifts between cocktail table, dining room table or bed support.  Two-barrel chairs are aft of the dinette.

In the galley area to starboard is a small dinette with seating for two.  The “U” shaped galley is further aft on the starboard side.  On the port side is a workshop with a top-loading freezer beneath the work counter.  Aft of the shop space is the head with a separate stall shower.  To starboard of the companionway is a forward facing navigation station.  The navigation station seat back folds over to provide a double quarterberth.   To port and aft is the enclosed master stateroom.   The engine is beneath the companionway ladder and the GenSet is located outboard of the shower stall.

The forward “convertible” cabin allows for a large living room, dining room, interior social space or a sleeping cabin.  This space can be fully enclosed by swinging the workshop door around to a athwart ship position and lifting a sliding partition forward of the dinette.  These doors are normally left open making the interior space wide, open and airy.  The settee cushions are sculpted and covered in Ultraleather.  The settee backs are hinged and lift up/store up to make use s both seats and single berths.   Removing a forward wedge shaped cushion allows the settee bottoms to hinge together resulting in a double, centerline berth supported by the salon table.   Outboard of the port seat back is a wine bottle storage rack.  A large dining table top is stored outboard of the starboard seat back in dedicated chocks.   Swiveling barrel seats aft and outboard are very comfortable.  There is a large amount of storage in the forward salon.  Three louvered doors forward access a full beam-hanging locker.  Outboard of the settees and below deck are open bookshelves secured to the hull sides.   Additional storage lockers and cabinets are aft of the settees on either side.  The starboard aft cabinet houses a flat screen TV and entertainment system.

On the starboard side and forward of the galley is a two-place dinette.  Removable pin rails fiddle the tabletop when underway.  Storage is underneath both settees.  The large “U” shaped galley is on the starboard side with entry from forward.  This working space is centered in the middle of the boat where motion is minimized.  Counters on either side of the galley provide excellent constraint while working in the galley underway.  Countertops are blue/gray flecked Corian with inboard Corian fiddles and a tall outboard cherry-caped Corian backsplash.  Starting forward and outboard is a storage cabinet below the counter.  A Samsung 110V microwave oven (New in 2016) fits perfectly on a shelf built for it.  Lifting the hinged counter top accesses a large top-loading refrigerator.  Above the refrigerator is a pantry cabinet behind double doors.  Next aft is the Force Ten three-burner stove and oven beneath a Corian bifold cover that hinges up and acts as a backsplash when using the stove.  A cabinet for galley supplies is outboard of the stove.  Aft below the counter are two drawers for utensils with a larger cabinet below them.  Aft above the counter is another storage cabinet.  Matching cherry paper towel holder, two thermos bottle racks and the propane solenoid switch are mounted on an aft bulkhead.  A large stainless steel sink is mounted beneath the counter inboard.   This places the sink right on the centerline of the boat for overboard draining at all heel angles.  A single lever gooseneck faucet serves the sink.  There is also a salt-water hand pump and a drinking water faucet for the Seagull filtered fresh water.  Storage for cleaning supplies is below the sink.  Forward and below the sink are two slide out wire drawers used to store vegetables and fruit.  Forward on the galley peninsula is a hinged, swing around cabinet with dividers and shelves for plates, bowls and cups.

To port opposite the galley is a workshop area above the freezer.  Outboard and under the freezer is a storage area for tool storage.  A workbench/countertop hinges open to access the large freezer.  An auxiliary DC switch panel, 110V Outlet and propane solenoid for the cabin heater are mounted above the workbench.  The Force Ten propane cabin heater is centrally located in the passageway in a recessed alcove with white ceramic tile surrounding it.

The head compartment is located aft of the galley in close proximity to the companionway allowing wet foul weather gear to be hung in the shower stall.  Forward in the head area is a vanity with a Corian counter and oval shaped stainless steel sink.  A wood framed mirror is mounted on the forward bulkhead.   The Raritan head is mounted outboard.  Storage cabinets are above the head.  The large stall shower is aft of the head and has ample headroom with a single lever mixing valve and shower hose.  Most surfaces within the head and shower are bright and easy to clean white wipe-down fiberglass or laminate with some cherry trim.  A narrow wood seat is outboard for showering at sea.  Outboard of the shower, below deck level is a storage compartment.  Shower drain water is pumped overboard via a drain pump.  The GenSet is located in an outboard-hinged cabinet in the shower enclosure.

To port of the companionway is the aft stateroom.  Forward and outboard is a bank of drawers, lockers and cabinets.  A queen-sized berth is aft, outboard and beneath the cockpit.   The berth is fitted with a very comfortable custom mattress.  Outboard of the berth are additional shelves and storage lockers.  Ventilation is provided in the aft stateroom by three opening ports and a small hatch that opens underneath the cockpit dodger.

To starboard of the companionway is the forward facing navigation station.  The navigator sits at a wide Ultraleather settee at the top opening chart table.   Hinged fiddles on the chart tables can be raised to keep the charts on the table while underway.  An angled cabinet above the chart table houses the radar/chart plotter, water maker control panel and the SSB.  To port of this panel is a Raymarine c95 chart plotter/AIS (New in 2014).   A shelf with high fiddles above this cabinet provides a catchall and location for the portable VHF chargers.  A clock, barometer, weather station and binocular rack are mounted on the bulkhead inboard of the chart table.  Outboard below the deck edge is the electrical switch/breaker and gauge panel.  Further aft below the deck edge and adjacent to the settee are the GenSet control panel, inverter charger controls, VHF, Bilge pump switches and counter and tank tender.  There is an 110V and 12V outlet located at the navigation station as well as a cabin fan.  Above the settee on the aft bulkhead is a wide bookshelf for storing equipment and ship manuals and documentation.  Below this shelf is a chart drawer.  The settee back can be folded down to utilize the full-length double quarter berth.

Deck and Hull

Procyon has a white hull with a dark blue (Majestic Blue Awlgrip) stripe running from the cap rail to the stainless steel capped rub rail.  A gold recessed, cove stripe intersects the black sheer stripe.  Bottom paint is black and a narrow black boot stripe is just above the bottom paint.  A rub rail with a stainless striker plate protects the hull sides.  Decks are white gel-coat with a molded in non-skid.  Teak decking are overlayed on the side decks adjacent the cockpit and on the cockpit sole.  A varnished teak cap rail tops the four-inch high raised bulwark.   The clipper bow has attractive gold scrollwork painted on both sides of the bowsprit side supports.   The fiberglass bowsprit is topped with natural, wide teak planking for non-skid.  A varnished teak eyebrow trim is fitted to the coach roof edges port and starboard.  Chrome bronze dolphin castings are located port and starboard at the cap rail transitions.

A large bow locker is accessed through a flush, fiberglass lid.  Forward in the bow is the chain locker.  Aft is storage space with removable teak floor slats.  Racks for dive tanks are on the aft bulkhead and a wash-down hose hangs to port.  The propane locker is furthest aft.  Chainplates, shrouds and mooring cleats are sat all the way outboard therefore the side decks are unobstructed and easy to traverse.

The cockpit is large and functional.  Protection from the elements is achieved with a low profile windshield, full-length dodger, rigid Bimini and full enclosure canvass.  All canvas and eisenglass is new in 2015.   This arrangement keeps the crew dry, shaded and comfortable.   The fiberglass steering pedestal/cockpit table breaks up the wide cockpit and functions as a housing for the engine controls, steering wheel, electronics and table base.  Drop leaves on either side enlarge the cockpit table for dining up to six people.  Procyon has a stainless steel mainsheet arch allowing the enclosure to stay in place while sailing.  Storage lockers are beneath the starboard side cockpit seats.  A fold down transom door/swim platform provides access to the water.  This arrangement effectively provides a walk-through transom for easy boarding.  A hot/cold bathing shower is located at the transom door.
