Description

No nonsense - does what it says on the tin, bluewater cruising Discovery 55, as only really Discovery Yachts Ltd. can. In her second ownership, she has been carefully maintained and has been used mainly in the Eastern Mediterranean, enjoying the lovely waters of Greece.  Practical Mk 1 layout, Solent rig by Discovery and of course, she comes with that signature flag blue topsides livery which has been wrapped to preserve it. Perfect platform for shorthanded world cruising in any ocean.

Construction

RCD Status: The yacht conforms with the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC (Recreational Craft Directive) and is categorised A – “Ocean”

 

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • The lay-up is in a female mould. The immensely strong lay-up is designed to meet or exceed Category A Ocean to give you peace of mind.
  • The composite construction incorporates an end grain balsa core that is vacuum bagged to provide complete structural integrity. The balsa also provides thermal and acoustic insulation which minimise any condensation and helps to provide for a quiet interior whilst sailing.
  • Two coats of isothalic gelcoat and non-pigmentation below the waterline mean the highest resistance to water penetration.
  • Two watertight bulkheads in the forward sections and third watertight with watertight door amidships adds a huge measure of safety.
  • The deck is also of composite construction with a balsa core. Grounding plate for SSB installation with 5m copper strip.

 

Keel & Rudder:

  • Half-length skeg hung rudder.
  • Lead keel, bolted externally.

Machinery

Engine & Gearboxes:

  • 1 x Perkins M115.
  • Service exchange turbo charger fitted 2021.
  • 2.5.1 Reduction gearbox.
  • Engine is mounted on flexible captive mounts.

Description of Accommodation:

 

From forward, there is a large lazararette, which is accessed from the deck with a crash bulkhead between it and the chain locker forward. Aft of it is another watertight bulkhead and behind it a VIP double cabin with hanging locker and ample storage. Through the door to a corridor running to the main saloon with a watertight bulkhead and watertight door separating this from the main saloon. The corridor provides access to a spacious upper and lower berth cabin to port and a guest heads compartment with separated shower stall to starboard.

 

The main saloon has a large circular seating area and dining table to port with the deck saloon windows providing vision, light and air. To port is a raised nav. station perfect for watch keeping when at sea and a useful passage berth. Moving aft there is a large linear galley to port walking after with twin sink and drainer, gas cooker, microwave, large refrigerator and freezer, lots of working space good ventilation from 3 opening ports and good stowage including underfloor. The aft cabin has a large double berth, masses of storage, sofa, vanity unit and lots of natural light. The owners’ en-suite heads has a large shower stall and basin unit and also access to the washer/dryer and via a sealed door, into the engine space where there is great access to the machinery.

Rig:

  • Cutter headed masthead cutter rig with Solent rig – twin headsails forward – with self-tacking arrangement on the jib, and in mast furling mainsail.

Winches:

  • 2 x Andersen Electrical 68ST Primary (headsail).
  • 1 x Andersen Electrical 52ST mainsheet.
  • 1 x Andersen Electrical 52ST to coach roof for main outhaul, jib sheet, genoa and jib furling. Yacht fitted as standard with Furlex manual headsail furling. Lines led to cockpit/coach roof elec. winch to provide ease and safety of totally manual furling from cockpit in the case of loss of winch electrics.
  • 2 x Andersen Manual 46ST 2 speed winches at mast.

  • Standard Discovery 55 rig. Heavy-duty headsails by ‘Hood’.

  • Main anchor – Delta (think 80 Lb.) on 70m chain (new 2018) spliced to 40m braid on braid.
  • Secondary bow anchor – Bruce 20 KG (2m chain and shackle in order to deploy on main chain when anchoring in strong wind).
  • Kedge in bracket on starboard quarter – large aluminium Fortress FX-55 15 KG with 6m chain spliced to 40m braid on braid.
  • Drogue anchor with 60 M of 24 mm line.
  • Lewmar V4/5 vertical electric anchor windlass with a 24v motor with remote control and control on the pedestal as well as foredeck, with gypsy for deploying line.
  • 9 x large cylinder fenders.
  • 2 x 900mm ball fenders (a godsend when moored where underwater surge pushes SHAMAN against a wall/pontoon).
  • 2 x 50m soft mooring lines for tying to shore while at anchor.

 

Covers, Canvas & Cushions:

  • Spray hood, all stitching replaced 2021 with UV resistant thread.
  • Fully folding bimini (replaced 2018) with sail sight windows. Also fitted with buckles over zip ends to prevent zip damage in high winds.
  • Cockpit, forward and stern seat cushions.
  • Cockpit table cover.
  • Windscreen cover.
  • Mast gaiter cover.

 

Tender & Outboard:

  • Dinghy Carib LT10 3 metre rib.

 

Safety Equipment:

  • Masthead mounted ‘See Me’ active radar reflector.
  • Ocean safety 8 man canister life raft (requires service).
  • Electric gas valve and gas alarm.
  • Fire extinguishers in main cabins, saloon and auto system in engine room.
