Custom 415 Radford Center Cockpit Design

40HP Isuzu with 825 hours

Surveyed in 2022 for Insurance and Valuation

A beautiful steel blue-water cruising sailboat built by owner in Vancouver and launched in 2005. Currently rigged as a cruising sloop.

This is an offshore capable cruiser of steel construction. She is not perfect. Full disclosure she needs some TLC. She does, though, have some really nice features and with the right owner could be a fantastic offshore sailing machine. The interior is bright white. Big top side hatches allow for a bright natural light interior. The port lights are a gorgeous chrome. There is a built in red tool box which is really cool. Many other features make this a special vessel. 

Engine is a three-cylinder 40HP Isuzu with 825 hours. Engine compartment houses the golf cart batteries, starting battery, 110v water heater, fuel tanks and smart chargers. The galley features a Force 10 propane three burner stove with oven, fridge/freezer compartments, countertop space and two sinks. Next to the galley is a navigation area with a fold-away chart table and the 110v/12v distribution panel, one of the two onboard VHF radios, as well as the am/fm radio. One of the two sonars on board is also located on the distribution panel so that a shallow water alarm can be heard whilst at anchor.

In the head there is a low maintenance Lavac toilet with a large diaphragm pump. Behind the toilet on the bulkhead are some hoses and collection points for easy access. Near the sink is the control panel for the 25 us gallon per hour engine driven water maker, on the opposite side is a removable panel for access to the engine.

The aft cabin consists of a full stand-up shower (limited head room) with mirrored sliding door. There is a large escape hatch located inside the shower to vent the moist air and to provide lots of light in the shower. There is a seat inside the shower space for showering during rough seas and allows for more storage. Outside the shower is an Airtight wood stove. Across from the wood stove are multiple shelves for clothes storage or provisions, below the shelves is additional storage. The double bed is located at the very back of the boat, the headboard has two shelves with dimmable LED lights and two opening portlights for maximum ventilation and light. Under the bed is yet another large storage area.

The V-berth has a built-in dehumidifier installed, a shelf for electronics and a full built in toolbox.

The saloon has a spacious seating area over water tanks with permanent lee cloths built in for offshore safety and comfort, a table will fold up and stow out of the way. A force ten diesel heater will keep you warm, dry and comfortable in all weather. Behind the seat cushions is storage for months of provisions and on both sides of the saloon are two spacious storage bookshelves.

Please note: Vessel is sold “as is, where is” and we are not prepared to do sea trials. The kayak mentioned in the survey and the videos is no longer included with the boat. 

Disclosure

The forward chain locker will need to have some repair done on the starboard side as some excessive deteriorated metal is evident - the surveyor has noted this in his survey.

Due to the repairs needed we will not be sea trialing the boat. The boat will be sold 'as is where is'.

The R415 is the latest of the R1000 Series steel cruising yachts and replaces the R400 which was designed in 1987. The increase in overall length of the R415 is accounted for by the size of the boarding platform and transom angle.

Kit Assembly:

The R415 can be assembled from a plasma cut kit. The kit saves a lot of time in the construction of the hull and deck, with no need to loft any of the components and very little bending (stringers) or cutting required. Options:

The R415 is currently available with a centre cockpit layout.

Accommodation:

The accommodation drawings give an indication of what will easily fit into the space available. As the accommodation does not contribute to the structural strength of the yacht it can be easily altered to suit the owner's requirements. Tanks are mostly located below the cabin sole. All layout drawings show comfortable, wide settees with angled backrests. The galleys are large with plenty of stowage. The forward vee berths can be converted to a double or, built as single upper and lower berths.

Sail Plan:

The keel stepped double spreader rig - with swept back spreaders - can be used as either a sloop or cutter. The cutter would be favoured for cruising with the staysail becoming the storm jib when required.

The R415 has good volume and the carrying capacity required for a cruising yacht. The following information shows the range of loading and changes in waterlines.

An effort should be made to build and load the yacht within the figures recommended. Overbuilding or adding any unnecessary weight during construction and fit out will detract from optimum loadings.

Keels and Draft:

All the lead ballast is in the bulb section of the foil giving a low center of gravity.

The R415 has a fabricated "bulb" keel with 1.75m (5'9") draft. The lead ballast is contained in the lower "bulb" section of the foil to give the lowest center of gravity possible  it is, in fact, only 185mm (7 1/4") from the keel base! This draft is necessary to achieve a reasonable range of positive stability for unrestricted offshore sailing.

Stability:

An aim of this design is to give a relatively high range of stability for a steel cruising yacht.

Scantlings:

The hull structure is based on the requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping (A.B.S.) Guide for Offshore Racing Yachts.

Hull frames and floors are spaced at 600mm (24") forward of midships and 650mm (26") aft. Regularly spaced stringers (300mm - 12") allow for the use of 4mm bottom hull plate and 3mm topside plate. The frames, backbone and keel base are cut from 8mm plate; the floors, keel plate, skeg, deck and house beams etc are cut from 4mm plate; while the deck, house and cockpit are cut from 3mm plate.

The maximum hull speed of the R415, at Speed / Length Ratio (S/L) = 1.34, is 8.45 knots. An efficient cruising speed is at S/L = 1.1, or 6.94 knots. The list shows the required shaft horsepower (SHP) for different speeds at 14,000kg (30,840lb) displacement. Note the rapid increase in required SHP (hence fuel consumption) for small gains in speed.

Based on a speed requirement, select an engine which - running at an optimum RPM - will give the required SHP for that speed.

In Conclusion:

The combination of the rig and hull shape will ensure good sailing performance while the airy accommodation space and the strength of the steel hull gives a safe, comfortable offshore cruising yacht.
