Description
How about a really cute CAT BOAT? "COOT" is perfect for day sailing for a couple or just single hand sailing. The Catboat design is amazingly simple to operate in all kinds of winds. Cat sailors know and love the advantages when tacking up a narrow creek. The wide beam gives an amazing amount of useable space below with a salon with sleeping bunks, a galley, and a head forward. With only 21 feet to deal with a couple can easily spend overnight or the weekend aboard. The real advantage however is the sailing. With the large mainsail and balanced helm you will love the feel of being on the water with you Kitty Cat 21.

COOT is a 21 foot Martin designed catboat built in 1983 by the Mark- O Custom boat company of New Jersey.
The boat is built to solid fiberglass construction standards common at the time. These scantlings produced a very sturdy vessel displacing almost 5,000 pound fully laden. The gaff rig has 350 square feet of sail to provide power on the lightest of wind conditions and with two sets of reef points can handle winds even when small craft warnings are posted. With 9.5 feet of beam the design provides additional stability and comfortable sailing in all conditions
COOT has been repowered with a inboard 20 hp 3 cylinder Pacer ( marine Kubota) diesel engine with 579 hours and is in excellent condition. At 1800 rpm the boat moves at 6 knots. The transmission is a ZF 10
See list of replace, rebuild for the extensive upgrades and replacements
The rig layout has all controls for the throat, peak and topping lift led to the cockpit on the starboard cabin top with line stoppers and a single speed self-tailing Lewmar #14 winch to provide for easy sail handling.
A traditional 6 spoke Edson wheel located in the aft portion of the large cockpit allows for easy control of the large catboat style rudder. The single lever engine controls are located next to the steering station on the port side. Engine gauges and ignition panel are directly opposite the engine controls.
Aft of the wheel is the 4 part mainsheet block and heavy duty adjustable traveler . Behind the traveler is the removable teak boom crutch.
The large cockpit easily handles 4 adults and features deep backrest and footwell for comfortable seating both underway and at anchor. The cockpit has 2 scuppers and is self draining. Excellent access to the engine compartment is thru a integrated lift off shoe box style hatch in the sole. Access to port and starboard cockpit drains is also gained thru this hatch. Transmission and dripless shaft seal service is gained here as well.
There are port and starboard cockpit lockers for additional storage.
Below decks starting forward, is a forepeak hatch for gaining access to the mast step, and chain locker. Aft of the forepeak locker is a enclosed head with direct access to the forward hatch. The head has both holding tank and direct overboard discharge capability. ( note the overboard discharge seacock is not connected at this time) A small locker is located on the port side within the compartment. The head has a solid teak door to provide for privacy and separation from the main cabin.
The main cabin is trimmed with teak thruout and the sole is traditional teak and holly with liftouts to gain access to the centerboard pin. the cabin had three brass cabin lights with LED bulbs installed. There is five foot 9 headroom in the main cabin.
The cabin has a sink and counter with a storage locker under to starboard. Access to the bronze seacock for the raw water for the head is found there. In addition, a separate bronze seacock is located in the same compartment for the sink drain. A whale foot pump for potable water is located under the locker face.
There is a cushioned setee aft on both the port and starboard with seating for six. The starboard setee makes up into a double bed when needed. on the aft starboard bulkhead is an additional access panel to the front of the diesel engine. Under both bunks are additional storage compartments with both lift out tops and teak flip down doors. The aft third of the salon is divided by the centerboard trunk with the bronze centerboard winch. The forward centerboard trunk has a unique permanent folding table which provides additional counter space when needed.
Aft of the trunk to port is a second counter that serves as a chart table or food prep area. A large storage compartment under the counter has a shelf with fiddles for additional stores.
The aft bulkhead companionway has a built-in two step teak ladder to gain entry to the cockpit. To port next to the ladder is the waterproof switch panel, battery gauge and bilge pump controls.
In the cockpit port locker. The boat has 30 amp service plug to port which leads to a breaker box in the port locker. ( note at this time the two outlet in the cabin are not wired to the breaker box. However provisions for two outlets are in place.
The port cockpit locker provides access to a guest 10 amp charger, built in waterproof 4 gang ground fault out, 2 group 27 marine batteries, ac breaker box, potable water tank and the back of the engine control cables.
The starboard cockpit locker provides access to the Racor 500 fuel filter, back of the engine gauge panel, and the fuel tank with gauge.
I have found this little catboat to be wonderfully suited boat for the Chesapeake. With her single sail and wheel steering she offers up care free cruising requiring little effort while underway. In addition with the board up drawing less than 2 feet, the thin waters of the creeks and shallows truly provide those " Catboat Corner" anchorages.
COOT had a surprisingly quick turn of speed and its rare that people don't comment about her appearance at dockside or underway. The reliable diesel starts instantly when there's no wind or when docking or unlocking.
In the next three weeks we will haul the boat to no skid the decks with Kiwi Grip, replace the fixed ports, and redo the bright work.
