Description
MS Sula – A Classic Norwegian Expedition & Liveaboard Vessel
MS Sula is a characterful and historic expedition vessel offering unforgettable nature experiences in Northern Norway. She is especially renowned for her orca and whale safari expeditions in Arctic waters, providing guests with rare and intimate encounters with marine wildlife.
History and Background
MS Sula was built in 1967 by Georg Eides Sønner AS in Høylandsbygd, Norway. For many years, she served as a working vessel for the Norwegian Coastal Administration, maintaining navigation aids and lighthouses along the rugged Norwegian coastline.
In 2006, the vessel was acquired by Olav Magne Strømsholm, founder of Orca Norway / Strømsholmen Sjøsportcenter, and carefully converted into a liveaboard expedition vessel dedicated to whale and orca experiences in Arctic Norway.
Expeditions and Experiences
MS Sula primarily operates in the waters of Northern Norway, particularly in the Troms region—one of the world’s best locations for observing orcas due to the large herring migrations that attract whales during the winter months.
Expeditions typically last 3 or 6 days, with a strong focus on searching for and spending time close to wild orcas. When conditions allow, guests may have the opportunity to snorkel or freedive alongside these magnificent animals under the guidance of experienced professionals.
In addition to orcas, guests may encounter other whale species, dramatic fjords, sea eagles, and—at the right time of year—the magical Northern Lights dancing across the Arctic sky.
Onboard Facilities
MS Sula offers comfortable yet simple accommodations, preserving an authentic seafaring atmosphere. The vessel accommodates up to 12 guests, ensuring a personal and intimate expedition experience.
Onboard amenities include:
Cabins with bunk beds, most with windows or portholes
Shared bathrooms with showers and toilets
A cozy indoor lounge for meals and socializing
An outdoor hot tub/jacuzzi, perfect for relaxing after long days at sea
Free Wi-Fi and open deck areas for wildlife observation and photography
A professional crew of five ensures safety, smooth operations, and attentive service throughout the voyage.
MS Sula is now for sale, as the owners expand to another vessel. MS Sula has earned excellent reviews for her welcoming atmosphere, close-to-nature experiences, and the high quality of guiding onboard. This is not a traditional luxury cruiser; instead, it offers a raw, genuine, and deeply immersive adventure—often described by guests as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
