Jachtwerf Victoria
Yard Victoria was a shipyard and builder of sailing yachts in Alkmaar. The yard was established in 1934 and gained recognition in the 1960s as one of the first Dutch manufacturers of polyester sailing boats.
The construction site
The yard was established in 1934 when yacht builder Cor Vader started building canoes. Later, wooden sailing boats were constructed, such as BMs, pampuses, and dragon boats. During World War II, wood was rationed, which severely complicated the making of sailing boats. During that period, the yard focused on renewing the interiors of inland vessels, for which wood was made available by the government. What remained of these wood jobs was still used by the yard for sailing boats.[1]
In the late 1950s, the yard began experimenting with polyester. In 1958, this experiment led to a plastic sailing and rowing boat for youth, which was sold for 500 guilders.[2] In the 1960s, the builder became one of the first in the Netherlands to focus on building yachts in fiber-reinforced polyester.[3] The first yacht of that type was the Victoire 22. Most designs were by Dick Koopmans.[4] The shipbuilder established a loyal customer base in both the Dutch and German-speaking areas, partly through dealers in Germany and Austria.
