General Layout

"SPRITE V's" interior was redesigned to maximize comfort and storage space. Her woodwork is second to none with Jespersen Boat Builders having been commissioned complete the work. In the forward stateroom there is a chain locker, large twin diagonal berths arranged in a VEE, locker and dresser to port, locker and private head with stall shower to starboard and a center door to aft. Off the companionway, a private stateroom to port has a twin size berth, locker, dresser and bureau, and a single athwartship upper berth. Opposite to starboard is a private two piece head that has an adjoining door to the stateroom shower stall. Moving aft, stairs mount to the bright galley with Corian countertops to starboard. The roomy salon features a free standing table and two chairs to port and a Queen Size “Comfort Sofa” hide-a-bed. On port are two tub chairs and end table with storage. A glass aft bulkhead with sliding door leads to the aft teak deck with open transom and extended swim platform. The command bridge has the helm to port with bench seat and a starboard dinette. A door in the end of the helm seat opens to reveal a dumb waiter that drops down through the deck to the salon. Drinks and snacks can be "ordered" using the intercom. Two 30lb propane tanks are located in a compartment to starboard. The fishing tender is a deluxe 14' 6" Rendova fibreglass RIB with 60hp. outboard and is carried on the aft hard cockpit canopy with a heavy duty davit crane for launching.

Surveyor's Comments

"Sprite V is heavily built and well equipped and is very spacious in its accommodation and machinery spaces. The vessel has had many upgrades and modifications, making it a very unique vessel. The vessel is boat house kept, so reducing any damage caused by weather. It has been maintained to a superior standard throughout its history, with very significant capital improvements, renewal and updating being carried out. All the work has been carried out to a high standard, using quality materials. This work brings Sprite V into a class of its own."

The History of "SPRITE V" as told by her Owner

Our family boat the Sprite V first began its journey as the Cove Lady. Built by Don Matheson of Canoe Cove Manufacturing, it was commissioned  by the owner of Harley Davidson of Canada, a Mr. Trev Deeley.

My Dad, Eddie Gudewill, bought the boat in 1984 and re-named her the Sprite V- the name comes from the soft drink Sprite which was an important product of his Coca Cola company, Goodwill Bottling Ltd. He had 10 wonderful years with Sprite V,  before his passing in 1994, in Nootka Sound. Rather than sell the boat, I said to my three younger brothers, "we have run this boat with Dad for the last 10 years, why don't we try running her together and see what happens?"

Thirty one years later, the rest is history! I own the boat and look after all the maintenance and upgrades and they participate in the op costs and share in the improvements of which there have been a lot. We collectively get about 100 days of usage a year out of the Sprite V.

A huge part of the boats raison d'etre has been the family's annual fishing treks to the Bella Bella area and points 100 miles north. We started at Rivers Inlet, went to Hakai Pass then to Spider Island then to McGinnes Lighthouse then to the north end of Aristazabel Island all to find places to fish where we could be relatively alone. We fish out of 17 foot whalers and our 14' Rendova tender and have 4 spring salmon over 60 pounds to our credit over the years.

Every 10 years we go up the Westcoast to Nootka Sound, South to North, to celebrate our Father.  Nine of us (3 bros, 2 sons, 3 nephews and myself) spend a week together hanging out and fishing the area along with my nephew Tim's 26 foot Bertram as a tender. This past year, our third trip, we even had Tim's 10 year old son Hayden along, the first great grandson to attend our festivities.

Over the years the boat has been to Alaska and Haida Gwaii several times. There is nowhere the Sprite V cannot go as she is a fantastic sea boat, all 26 tons of her. At 22 knots top speed I have water skied behind her numerous times!

The Sprite V now has quite a few years under her hull however, no expense has been spared to do all of the most careful upgrades humanly possible to bring her up to "as new" standards. Jespersen Boatworks, Canoe Cove Manufacturing, and Blackline Marine deserve most of the credit. In addition, we re-powered her with Cummins 8.3 liter engines (QSC 8.3-500-HO) in 2015 along with a total rewire job. There are now only 2200 hours on the engines.

A detailed list of all the improvements and upgrades are available upon request.

It is not practical for my two sons to take over the boat so we have elected to sell our family treasure. I can assure whoever is lucky enough to be the next owner after these past 41 years of Gudewill ownership (always boathouse kept) that they will be inheriting an amazing boat, a ship that will provide years and years of great and affordable service.

Over and out, Captain Nick G.
