Description
The second of only five original Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 25’s built at HMCo in 1914, VITESSA (HMCO #734) is both a stunning boat to sail and a timeless piece of yachting history.
The 32’ Buzzards Bay 25 was conceived as a larger and sleeker version of Nat Herreshoff’s personal sloop ALERION, and according to his son Sidney, this was NGH's favorite among the many hundreds of models he made.
According to VITESSA’s owner, George P Granbery in 1936 “in my opinion these boats are the best day sailing craft ever designed. For a combination of comfort, ability, easy handling and appearance I have never seen their equal.”
VITESSA’s rig was modified from the original gaff to a Marconi sloop rig early in her career, and a mizzen mast was added at some point, making her much easier to sail.
In 2000-2001 VITESSA received a complete keel-up rebuild at MP&G Boatbuilding in Mystic, CT. Since then VITESSA has been superbly maintained and sailed annually in Round Pond, ME.
