Description
Launched in 1939 in England for an American businessman, EROS was commissioned as a large, safe, and easily handled world-cruising schooner. After the war, she was acquired by Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos, who kept her for three decades and welcomed a glittering guest list including King Juan Carlos of Spain (who honeymooned aboard in 1962) and composer Cole Porter. Since then, she has had only three further owners, each of whom has ensured her continued preservation and use as both a family yacht and a successful charter vessel.
Between 1990 and 2010, EROS underwent a complete 20-year rebuild at Stone Boatyard in Alameda, California. Every plank, system, and fitting was either painstakingly restored or replaced to modern standards, while her teak decks, rig, and interior were rebuilt with longevity in mind. More recently, her current owners have continued a rigorous program of upgrades at respected yards, including Boothbay Harbor Shipyard (2023, 2025) and Fairhaven Shipyard (2018). Recent works include new Garmin navigation, rebuilt 25 kW Northern Lights generator, doubled water-maker capacity, extensive hull and rig servicing, topsides refinished with the Epifanes system, rudder and transom rebuilds, and full deck varnish and detailing.
Today, EROS offers four refined guest cabins, separate crew quarters, a modern galley, air conditioning, upgraded AV systems, and a bright deckhouse with direct interior access – making her comfortable for extended passages or charter programs.
She combines the character of a true classic – Burmese teak planking, bronze fittings, sweeping schooner lines – with the reliability of a fully modernized yacht. A capable passagemaker and proven charter performer, she has cruised extensively in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and New England, crossing oceans with ease. With her rich history, comprehensive restoration, and ongoing professional maintenance, EROS represents an exceptional opportunity: a yacht of pedigree, beauty, and proven earning potential, equally suited to private family cruising or continued charter success.
