Layout
The Nauticat 38 features a clever layout that prioritizes both outdoor and indoor living spaces. The boat is easy to move around, with a large raised aft deck – a classic Nauticat design – with an outside helm and access to the bathing platform.
Dual side entrances to the pilothouse (port and starboard). The pilothouse is spacious and includes a dedicated seating area. Aft is the owner’s cabin with en-suite bathroom, and forward you’ll find a galley and dinette/salon, which can easily be converted into a double berth. Forward bathroom and V-berth in the bow. A total of 6 berths in 2 cabins plus the saloon.
Headroom inside is approx. 185 cm.
Seakeeping
The Nauticat 38 is known for its safe and predictable handling, and there are several reasons it has become a favorite among long-distance cruisers and families who prioritize comfort and stability:
✅ Safe and stable in rough seas
With a long keel and heavy displacement (approx. 11 tons), it offers a smooth and stable ride. It handles rough conditions and waves calmly and absorbs motion well – especially important for longer passages.
✅ Easy to maneuver at low speeds
While not a performance sailboat, the powerful engine and bow thruster (as many models have) make it easy to maneuver in tight harbors.
✅ Dry and secure deck handling
High freeboard and sturdy guardrails provide safety on deck. The classic teak deck and pilothouse with full visibility make navigation comfortable even in poor weather.
✅ Moderate sailing performance
With mizzen mast and cutter rig (two headsails + mizzen), the boat offers flexible sail plans. It’s not designed for high speed under sail, but performs well in moderate wind – best comfort and control come from combining sail and engine power.
Engine & Mechanical
Equipped with a Ford 2712E 80 hp diesel engine, with 7,151 engine hours.
Also fitted with a Sleipner SP95T 6 kW bow thruster for easy maneuvering, with controls at both helm stations.
Low fuel consumption: approx. 5 liters/hour at 1,500 RPM.
