Description
This 1981 Alajuela 48 is a rare opportunity to own one of the finest examples of classic offshore craftsmanship. Designed by Raymond Richards and built to the highest standards by Alajuela Yacht Corp, this vessel combines traditional lines, seaworthy performance, and exceptional liveaboard comfort — a true ocean going passage maker. The Alajuela 48 was conceived as a heavy-displacement, full-keel, ketch rigged cutter and a canoe stern, designed to deliver safety, balance, and an easy motion at sea. Recent upgrades include: New rigging - 2024, New running rigging - 2022, New Beta Marine 85hp engine 2020. Upgraded electrical system including, New electronics and navigation equipment 2022- 2024, New lithium batteries 2024, New water maker 2023, New Starlink 2022. Recently anti-founded August 2025.

Accommodations
Two-cabin, two-heads offering up to 8 berths. 6'7ft headroom and good ventilation throughout.
FORWARD CABIN: Forward most cabin is a workroom/sail/ground tackle storage with top opening hatch.
FORWARD HEADS: To fwd port is the shower room and to starboard is the Lavac heads and wash basin.
PORT & STB CABINS: Owners cabin to stb, with double pullman style berth, vanity area and hanging locker. To port, cabin with double pullman style berth which can be converted to two sea berths.
GALLEY: Midships to port, U-shaped galley with large s/s sink, 4 burner hob and oven, fridge (not working, needs compressor), (Dometic CFX 100 fridge or freezer in saloon), counter tops and plenty of drawers and storage.
COMPANION WAY: Midships stb side, steps leading down from deck.
HEADS: To stb, heads with marine Lavac toilet and wash basin.
SALOON: Aft large horseshoe dining area that converts into double berth. Outboard surrounded by bookshelves and cabinets with stained glass inserts.
NAV STATION: To Starboard, with chair, chart table desk and electrical panels.

Construction
Flying Whale was built by Alajuela Yacht Corp., USA to Lloyds standards. She is an ocean cruiser built with hand-laid fiberglass, a fin keel and skeg-hung/partial-skeg rudder, heavy lead ballast and traditional teak trim. Last anti-fouled August 2025. Decks are painted and need re-painting.
