Description

The Tartan 33 was Tartan's first boat with a more modern hull design i.e. a semi fin keel. She is a Sparkman & Stephens design ; however when it came to designing the keel Tartan decided to to commission Henry Scheel to design his patented ( Scheel Keel ) for the 33. The first 180 or so boats had a fractional rig ( later on the 34 version of the 33 switched to a masthead rig)

BUT from a cruising point of view the frac rig makes for an easier boat to handle because of the smaller head sail. Instead of changes head sailsĀ  you simply drop it or roll it up and continue on with a reefed main.
