1985 Freedom 32 (32.8’) – Classic Cat-Rigged Cruiser / Liveaboard Platform. This boat is extremely clean compared to most!
The 1985 Freedom 32 is a well-regarded Garry Hoyt–designed cruising sailboat known for its innovative freestanding mast, clean deck layout, and exceptional ease of handling. With its generous beam, open interior, and strong offshore reputation, the Freedom 32 remains a highly desirable platform for coastal cruising or liveaboard use.
This vessel is equipped with an excellent sail inventory including a spinnaker, mainsail, and jib. The boat is well set up for extended stays aboard, featuring shore power, air conditioning, water heater, and a solar charging system that keeps the batteries maintained while at rest.
Power is provided by a 2016 Yanmar 3YM30AE diesel. The engine is currently locked up; however, it presents very clean and may be service-related rather than requiring full replacement. This is reflected in the offering and provides an opportunity for a mechanically inclined buyer or refit-minded sailor to add value.
Overall, this Freedom 32 offers classic Freedom design, excellent liveaboard amenities, and strong long-term potential.

-Ease of handling.
If you have a freestanding rig, you have ONE thing that can break and go wrong – the mast breaking. If you have a standard rig, you have literally hundreds of parts that could break, any one of which could cause the rig to come down (and that includes the mast by the way). Being able to look up at rigging doesn't mean you are any safer or that your rig is any more secure. You are just looking up at hundreds of potential failure points, instead of one. And it's not like you have redundancy with a standard rig – lose one cotter pin, and the whole thing could come down. So, don't buy into the notion that you are more secure with a fully rigged sail plan than a freestanding rig.
