PRODUCT INFORMATION:
The 1988 Catalina 36 is a well-rounded, production cruising sailboat that continues to earn respect for its solid construction, comfortable accommodations, and forgiving sailing characteristics. Designed by Frank Butler and built in California, the Catalina 36 quickly became a favorite among coastal cruisers and club racers alike.
At 36 feet overall with an 11’11” beam, the boat offers generous interior volume without being unwieldy at the dock or under sail. The layout is traditional and functional: a spacious V-berth forward, a large salon with opposing settees (one converts to a double berth), and an aft cabin with a full-size double tucked under the cockpit. The galley is U-shaped and practical underway, with ample counter space, a two-burner stove, oven, and a deep icebox. Opposite, the nav station is large enough for serious plotting and houses the electrical panel.
On deck, the Catalina 36 features wide side decks, a secure cockpit, and good visibility from the helm. The tall rig version gives better light-air performance, while the standard rig balances upwind performance with easier handling. Sail controls are led aft, and with a balanced spade rudder and fin keel (standard or shoal-draft), she steers easily and tracks well under sail. Most boats came with a reliable 25- to 30-hp Universal diesel that sips fuel and provides dependable auxiliary power.
Maintenance-wise, the boat benefits from straightforward systems, though some aging components—like the original fuel tank, standing rigging, or chainplates—may need attention in older models. Still, Catalina’s extensive owner support network and parts availability remain strong selling points.
Overall, the 1988 Catalina 36 is an honest, versatile cruiser—ideal for weekend sailing, coastal cruising, or even living aboard. She's not flashy, but she delivers where it counts: comfort, simplicity, and solid performance.
