Description

Originally designed to race IMS, the J39 has aged gracefully into a handicap machine. Very competitive, she rates 55 PHRF PNW.

Current owner, purchased for cruising light airs of the PNW and added creature comforts with out loosing her performance edge. 6' headroom with a giant v-berth.

Recent survey finds her "Diligently maintained" and ready for service.

The J/Boats 39 (J/39) is widely considered a  very good performance sailboat, particularly known for its success as an offshore racer that performs well under various handicap rules. It is well-regarded for its speed, handling, and solid construction, though its design reflects a balance between racing efficiency and cruising functionality.
Pros
  • Excellent Sailing Performance: The J/39 is a light, stiff, and high-performing boat that is fast in a wide range of conditions. Its hull shape and high aspect rig contribute to a rewarding sailing experience with finger-light and positive helm feedback.
  • Effective Racer: Originally designed for IMS and successful under other rules like PHRF and IRC, it is an effective club and offshore racer. The deck layout is designed for racing efficiency, with wide, uncluttered side decks for easy movement.
  • Good Build Quality: J/Boats are known for their solid and well-executed fiberglass work, and the J/39 is no exception.
  • Functional Interior for Offshore: The interior is functional for a racing crew, featuring a good number of berths (including optional pipe berths) and a practical galley, making it suitable for distance races or weekend jaunts.
  • Versatile Design: While optimized for racing, many owners have converted their J/39s for cruising, finding that the efficient deck layout and comfortable motion underway work well for this purpose.

Cons
  • Compromised Anchoring Comfort: The cockpit lacks seatbacks and coamings, which is great for hiking out while racing but can be a problem when trying to find a comfortable place to sit and relax at anchor or in a marina.
  • Basic Cruising Amenities: The interior, while functional, is not as luxurious or as voluminous as a pure cruising yacht of similar size, reflecting its primary performance focus.
  • Basic Head Arrangement: The standard head is forward of the main bulkhead, and not the most luxurious, although sufficient for its intended use.
  • Potential for High Control Line Volume: The race-oriented deck layout with numerous control lines means you need to be on top of rope management, or the cockpit can become cluttered.
In summary, the J/39 is highly regarded by performance sailors for its speed and responsive handling. It serves very well as a dual-purpose cruiser-racer for those who prioritize sailing performance, but those seeking maximum comfort and luxury in a pure cruising boat might find its amenities basic compared to dedicated cruising designs.
