Considered perhaps to be one of the most successful sailboats ever conceived, the Catalina 30 has become one of the most popular family cruisers with a long history of satisfied owners. The design offers all of the essential elements necessary for satisfying cruising. The layout is comfortable and spacious for her size and the boat is easy to handle, even short handed.
This particular Catalina 30 was purchased by her owners when she was brand new. They’ve always kept her professionally maintained by one of New England’s finest boat yards.
The owners wax the hull every spring.
The boat is being stored mast up during winters. The owner had the mast down last winter for inspection. The owners have had the mast down three times for inspections over course of ownership.
Accommodations
Considered perhaps to be one of the most successful sailboats ever conceived, the Catalina 30 has become one of the most popular family cruisers with a long history of satisfied owners. The design offers all of the essential elements necessary for satisfying cruising. The layout is comfortable and spacious for her size and the boat is easy to handle, even short handed.
V-Berth forward with removable insert. A large overhead hatch provides plenty of light and ventilation along with a great view of the stars. The head is located just aft of the V-Berth to port. The head is complete with hot & cold pressurized water, shower and enclosed storage for miscellaneous toiletries. The head is well ventilated, adequate in size and features mirrored enclosure slides. A hanging locker along with drawers and storage shelve are located opposite the head to starboard.
A U-shaped settee is located to port just aft of the head. As a very useful and space saving design, the dining table is mounted against the forward bulkhead which keeps the overall feel of the salon bright and open. The table easily converts to a handsome dinette yet can also be cleverly dropped to convert the port settee to a double berth. With the table up and out of the way, the port settee provides an excellent space for leisurely reading or comfortable conversation.
The cushions throughout the interior are in excellent condition, showing light use and excellent maintenance. Throughout the interior, there are plenty of opening ports to allow adequate light and ventilation. The overall feel is bright and clean with all of the teak joinery showing little in the way of scratches or abuse. Ash battens running the length of the settees accent the teak port and starboard and provide some nice color contrast.
The galley is located to port just aft of the settee and is configured in a very safe and functional “U-Shape”. There is ample working space with everything conveniently located within arms reach. Storage drawers for cooking utensils are neatly stacked to one side with the duel sinks and countertop space opposite. Again within arms reach, additional storage for plates, glasses & food stores are conveniently located above the two-burner gimbaled stove/oven. This is a very nice galley arrangement that keeps traffic from interfering with the progress of meal preparation.
The Nav station is located opposite the galley to starboard. The Nav station features a hinged chart table with storage in the desk beneath and navigation light, which is mounted on a flexible conduit. The circuit panel is located above the chart table, mounted along the starboard bulkhead. The Loran and VHF radio are also mounted along the starboard bulkhead and are in easy working reach for the navigator.
The quarter berth by day serves as the seat to the Nav station. Located just aft to starboard, the quarter berth is very wide and will easily accommodate two. This space is well finished and is trimmed in the same ash battens found in the salon. The combination of the ash battens, generous headroom and an opening port (cockpit bulkhead) allow this space to escape that “cave like” feel that all too often invades the quarter berth experience.
All and all, this is one great layout and it is easy to see why this boat has developed such a grand following.
