Description
NEW LISTING - OYSTER 56/17 FARIO
BROKER'S COMMENTS
The 56 is Oyster’s most popular model ever; seventy-five were launched between 1998 and 2010, and it is arguably the quintessential Oyster design. During this time the 56 was the undisputed class leader and did more than any other design to establish the 56-59’ (17-18m) size range as perhaps the ideal for owners without crew; large and spacious enough for rapid ocean cruising and to accommodate her crew in safety, comfort and style when living aboard, but also compact enough to be handled by a couple.
The 56 was the first Oyster design to be drawn for us by Rob Humphreys, beginning a partnership that continues to this day, and he certainly got it right first time. The 56 retained earlier successful Oyster design features; the single skin hull construction with stiffness provided by massive ribs and stringers, keel-stepped mast, and the full-length rudder skeg protecting the entire rudder. The 56 was the first yacht to benefit from an ergonomically designed cockpit, designed in conjunction with Loughborough University, creating a space which makes relaxing and entertaining a true pleasure, whilst maintaining all the essential qualities you would expect of a serious ocean-going yacht.
Fario is hull number 17 and was launched in 2001. She is now in her second ownership; her current owners having acquired her in 2003. Although specified and equipped for a circumnavigation, she has sailed to the Caribbean and back once and then enjoyed family sailing in the Mediterranean. She has perhaps the ultimate short-handed bluewater rig with push-button hydraulic furling to her mainsail, genoa, and staysail, all controlled from the cockpit. Below decks, she has hand-finished in American cherry joinery, which gives a rich and luxurious feel.
Well maintained and constantly upgraded, Fario would be an outstanding choice for anyone looking for an Oyster for the Oyster Word Rally or other bluewater cruising.
MANUFACTURER'S COMMENTS
The quintessential Oyster and undisputed class leader at this size, the 56 is also our most successful model, with seventy-five launched between 1998 and 2010. Rob Humphreys designed the 56 to be large enough for rapid ocean cruising and to accommodate her crew in comfort and style when living aboard, but also to be small and agile enough to be handled by a couple.
The 56 was the first yacht with an ergonomically designed cockpit, the result of working with Loughborough University's Ergonomics department, making relaxing and entertaining a true pleasure, whilst maintaining all the essential qualities you expect from a serious seagoing yacht. She’s a proven performer with class wins in the ARC, and also winning Cruising Class 1 at Antigua Sailing Week, beating a number of more serious racing competitors.

OWNERS’ COMMENTS
“We don’t know why we are selling the boat because she is such a beautiful boat and we are still having such good sailing and enjoyment on her, but time and tide wait for no man, and at our ages now, we think it’s time to let her go.
She has been maintained meticulously with continuous updates, extras, and maintenance schedules. I visit the boat every couple of months. She has only been used for light cruising by us, as the engine and generator hours will show. The interior woodwork of crown cut cherry has now got its ultimate patina and colour and looks simply stunning. With a look in the engine room and under the sole boards, one would be hard pushed to say she was not a new commission. The hydraulic passerelle is a delight, especially with female and older guests.
As a cruising yacht, we have never had a bad word said about her sailing performance, comfort, ability, and reliability. She is the envy of many of our friends with other boats of international fame, but nowhere near the first-rate quality, build, and design of this Oyster 56. I have a full-service history available through monthly logs of work done and service engineer’s bills.”
