Description
The Hallberg-Rassy 46, designed by Germán Frers, is widely regarded as one of the most capable and elegant offshore cruising yachts ever produced. Built in Ellös, Sweden, from 1995 to 2005, this renowned Swedish sailboat builder set a benchmark for bluewater cruising yachts with comfort, safety, and long-range performance. More than 130 were built, and the model received consistent acclaim from the international sailing press—including Cruising World, Sailing Magazine, and Yachting Monthly—for its robust construction, thoughtful design, and superior sea-keeping abilities. Twice selected as Cruising World's Best Full-Size Cruiser, the Hallberg-Rassy 46 was praised for its well-protected center cockpit, finely crafted mahogany interior, and ocean-ready sailboat structure, earning its CE Category A certification for unlimited offshore use. It remains a top choice among sailors looking for a cruising sailboat with upgrades for serious passage-making.
Sonder exemplifies the pedigree and enduring value of this celebrated model. Built under the supervision of Germanischer Lloyd and delivered with full CE Category A certification, she was launched in 2003 and is available today as a rare Hallberg-Rassy 46 for sale. This liveaboard sailboat is well equipped for independent passage making with three private cabins, two heads, and the systems redundancy expected of a proper offshore sailing yacht.
With her moderate displacement, powerful rig, and easily handled hydraulic sail controls, Sonder is engineered for performance cruising without compromise. Whether you're planning to cruise the Chesapeake or cross oceans, she delivers a rare combination of seaworthiness, aesthetic refinement, and technical reliability. Representing the pinnacle of a design built at the height of Hallberg-Rassy's reputation, this center cockpit sailboat is a standout example for anyone seeking a yacht of proven capability, traditional craftsmanship, and long-term value.
Accommodations
Stepping below through the secure center cockpit companionway, Sonder’s interior immediately reflects Hallberg-Rassy’s signature craftsmanship: rich, satin-finished mahogany joinery, teak-and-holly sole with light inlays, and a warm, traditional layout optimized for both offshore functionality and liveaboard comfort.
At the bow is the forward cabin, which features a spacious V-berth with a removable center infill to convert twin berths into a generous double. Storage is thoughtfully integrated above and below, with cabinets lining the hull sides and deep lockers beneath the berth. Just aft to port is a twin-berth cabin, with two comfortable bunk-style beds, a hanging locker, mirrored vanity, and additional cabinet storage. Opposite, to starboard, is the forward head, finished in easy-to-clean white laminates and equipped with an electric toilet, Corian countertop, wash basin, and a molded shower area with teak grate and dedicated drain pump.
Moving aft, the main saloon offers a classic and welcoming space for dining and relaxation. To port is a large L-shaped settee surrounding a finely varnished teak dining table with folding leaves and bottle storage within. To starboard is a straight settee that doubles as a secure sea berth and cabinets outboard. Louvered locker doors allow airflow for stored items, and additional storage is available below all seating. Midships to port is the navigation station, complete with a forward-facing chart table, full electrical panel, integrated electronics, and a custom-built locker designed to house a laptop and printer. Across to starboard is the galley, laid out in a secure U-shape for safe use underway. It features deep double stainless-steel sinks with pressure water and foot pumps (fresh and seawater), a Force 10 three-burner propane stove with oven and broiler, and two top-loading refrigerator/freezer units—one in the galley and one just aft of the nav station. Storage includes deep drawers, sliding-door lockers, and ample counter-level shelving.
Continuing aft through the port-side passageway, engine room access is found via large removable panels inboard. This leads to the private owner’s stateroom, which spans the full beam and features a centered double berth flanked by generous hanging lockers, drawers, and hull side cabinetry. A cushioned dressing settee sits to port, while the ensuite head to starboard includes a separate stall shower, Corian surfaces, an electric toilet, and opening portlight.
Throughout the yacht, overhead hatches, portlights, and dorade vents provide ventilation, and every living space includes custom blinds, screens, or curtains. The interior lighting has been upgraded to energy-efficient Alpenglow LEDs, carefully matched to the original woodwork for aesthetic continuity.
