Description
Dazcat is a brand of high-performance, award winning, cruiser-racer catamarans, established in 1988 and designed and built by the Multihull Centre, Cornwall, UK. Dazcats are few and far between. On average, the Multihull Centre, have launched one a year for the last 30 years.
The company specializes in creating lightweight, high-performance multihulls that blend speed, comfort, and safety, using advanced composite materials and carbon fibre. The designs are renowned for their sailing capabilities, making them suitable for both competitive racing (often featured in the Fastnet Race) and fast family cruising.
The Dazcat 1195 is one of one of Dazcat’s most popular models and there only five in existence. The first 1195, Suenos, was launched in 2010 for a very experienced multihull owner, who had extensive input into the design. Spirit of Freedom followed in 2011 for another experienced multihull owner whose family trade was boat building. Her interior was fitted out to suit comfortable cruising. Rip van Winkle was built for an owner based in the USA, and the final two, Rock Steady and Merlin are in France.
The 1195s are described as the ‘cruiser’s racer’ as they are easily driven performance catamarans designed for coastal and offshore cruising and racing. The 1195’s ‘advanced composite construction’ has proven very robust and light, and has been cruised and raced in challenging conditions, including to the Canaries and Azores. Being light and with a powerful rig, it can be sailed faster than motored in 6 knots plus of wind but is easily reefed and controllable once the conditions pick up. The deck layout has been carefully considered for single handed sailing and all controls are easily to hand.
In 2017 Dazcat replaced the 1195 with the 1295, with several of these amazing machines built since. Incredible as they are, with a price tag in excess of £1M they are out of reach of most of us. Spirit of Freedom offers the very rare chance to own one of these extraordinary boats at a very reasonable price.
Catamarans are increasingly popular for many reasons: space on board, visibility from inside and out, stable sailing platforms without heeling to name a few. The downside of most catamarans is that they don’t sail well to windward. Unless they are designed with daggerboards, they are going to struggle. Dazcats are one of the very few catamarans that are comfortable enough to enjoy a long cruising holiday while sailing well enough to satisfy any monohull sailor. Just look at the RORC race results for proof. Want to cruise up to a shallow anchorage and swim off the back? Race the Fastnet? Cross the Atlantic? You can with a Dazcat.
We have owned Spirit of Freedom for three years, and as previous dinghy and monohull sailors, but now with young children, we have found her the perfect boat to satisfy our sailing requirements whilst also being an ideal platform for family adventures. We have cruised her extensively around the Solent, South Coast and English Channel, and found her perfect to sail solo, with friends, and most of all, with family on board - young and old.
The Multihull Centre specialise in the build and refit of multihulls and custom projects and are enormously respected internationally for their expertise. Spirit has been taken back to her birthplace at the Multihull Centre in Cornwall for extensive works over the past two winters and is now situated on the hard in Thornham Marina, Emsworth, Hampshire.
Why are we selling? To buy another 1195! Our longer-term dream was to do an Atlantic Circuit in 4 years’ time, when the children were old enough to participate. When the option to purchase another Dazcat 1195 based in the US became available we jumped at the chance and our dream has moved a little closer.
Note: Professionally applied copper coat NEW 2025.
