1. CONSTRUCTION 

 

HULL NUMBER

Oyster 545.08.

 

HULL CONSTRUCTION

Hull and deck moulded from female tooling generated by a computer driven five axis cutter to ensure fairness and accuracy, in carefully controlled and monitored conditions. Hull skin laminated in layers of quadriaxial glass fibre cloth, with reinforcement of the hull shell achieved using L-beam frames and stringers which incorporate carbon unidirectional fibres.

The hull is moulded using vinylester resin with the outer topside finished in a white NPG gelcoat, which has excellent UV resistance and waterproofing qualities, and is suitable for use in tropical environments. Vinylester resin is utilised for its impermeable properties and forms a strong matrix for the fibres.

Laminate material comprises a combination of E-glass mats and local carbon fibre specially designed for the yacht by Oyster’s structural engineers. This custom laminate of different fibres offers significant weight savings, strength, and stiffness advantages over a traditional Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) construction.

The topside structure incorporates an 18mm end-grain, balsa core above the waterline for additional strength, stiffness and insulation.

Beneath the waterline, the hull features a solid (single-skin) laminate reinforced with a web of stringers, L-section beams, and floors. Combined with an arrangement of BS1088 standard marine ply, and glass/carbon/foam structural bulkheads, this produces a robust structure with excellent strength to weight quantities, and proven longevity.

The main V1/D1 chainplates are constructed in carbon fibre and are integrally bonded into the hull structure. Local reinforcement is applied at the keel recess, the keel longitudinals, mast bulkhead, P-bracket, forestay, and hull stringers.

Limber holes and tubes are installed at appropriate points. Stainless steel floors are formed over inert polyurethane foam.

 

HULL FINISH

White hull with cove line and double boot top lines in ‘RAL 7045 Telegray 1’.

Boot top sprayed in Awlgrip ‘Medium Grey’.

 

DECK CONSTRUCTION

Moulded in GRP to the ‘Oyster G5’ style with balsa core.

 

DECK FINISH

Teak laid decks.

Deck edge incorporates a bulwark, which facilitates relatively flat side decks. Top of bulwark has a clean GRP finish, giving a modern and stylish ‘rolled’ edge.

All locker hinges and catches are recessed into the teak planking, where appropriate.

 

KEEL

High performance bulb (HPB) external lead keel.

 

RUDDER

Fully protected skeg-hung rudder.

 

STERN DESIGN

‘Sugar scoop’ stern design with bathing platform trimmed with teak slats and stainless steel steps for access to the stern deck.

34kg (75lb) CQR anchor that stows in the stemhead fitting.

80m of 12mm calibrated galvanised chain, matched to the windlass gypsy and fastened at its ‘bitter end’ to a through-bolted stainless steel attachment with substantial lanyard.

SALOON

Access to the saloon from the cockpit is via a set of timber and stainless steel steps with timber handrails.

The saloon is extremely light and airy with seven windows, of which two of the three forward ones open. There are two large horizontal hullports that give a ‘seascape’ vista whilst at anchor.

Featuring a squared table with hinge-over second leaf and settee area to port.

To starboard is an L-shaped settee and the table.

Outboard of this and aft, is a large locker, which accommodates glasses.

The saloon table is designed to form, in its closed position, an occasional table, mounted on a very substantial pedestal, incorporating a locker, which is also the location for the washer/dryer. A locking device ensures the tabletop does not open in heavy weather. The tabletop is a veneered panel with solid timber edging. A grab rail is incorporated on its inboard edge.

This table can open to form a large dining table when the upper leaf is folded out across the saloon and rests upon its removable support leg.

NAVIGATION AREA

To starboard and aft of the saloon, the chart table is customised around the flushmounted electronics and navigational equipment. Fascia in walnut.

The table can accommodate a half-folded Admiralty chart with further stowage beneath. A stainless steel stay is fitted on the chart table lid.

Bookrack outboard at the hull side.

Drawer below the navigator’s seat.

AC and DC electrical panels in ‘matt black’ are located aft and inboard of the chart table.

Inboard there is an access door into the engine room.

GALLEY

Situated to port of the cockpit is the walkthrough galley.

Aft and inboard is an oilskin hanging locker.

Basket system in locker at aft inboard end of the galley. Two large/deep baskets at the bottom and two small/shallow baskets on top.

Shelf outboard of the cooker has an Avonite fiddle and stainless steel retaining bar.

Shelf above galley sinks is full width for mugs and glassware with small timber fiddle and stainless steel retaining bar.

Frigomatic 24V (keel-cooled) refrigeration system with additional Frigoboat condenser to cool the front opening refrigerator, with stainless steel door, shelves and automatic door light.

Frigomatic 24V (keel-cooled) system with additional Frigoboat condenser for top opening freezer box. Small stainless steel support strut fitted to lid and baskets for stowage.

 

ENGINE ROOM

Access to the engine room is via a large hinged door within the aft head compartment, and chart table area or via removable panels beneath the galley sinks. All access panels are fitted with rubber sealing strips to minimise noise and secured by positive catches.

Insulated with a composite of foam and high-density polymer sound absorbing materials. Equipment is mounted on anti-vibration mounts.

24V lighting, and a 24V extractor fan, switched at the DC electrical panel. Ducted to the transom and designed to be used after the engine has been shut down to evacuate the hot air from the engine space, the fan is not to be run continuously.

An automatic fire extinguisher is installed.

OWNER’S STATEROOM

Situated aft and configured with a double berth offset from centreline complete with storage drawers beneath. Full-width upholstered headboard. Berth surround in oak. Mattress upgraded to Vispring (medium) with zip and link system.

Beneath the berth is a large drawer and further top-access for stowage or maintenance. Additional 3-drawer locker on starboard side.

The generator starting battery is charged by its own 12V alternator.

BOW THRUSTER

Electric Sleipner SE170 (10.7hp) 250mm tunnel bow thruster installed in the forepeak, with twin counter-rotating propellers to facilitate easy manoeuvring in tight harbours and marinas, and dedicated battery.

 

STEERING SYSTEM - Whitlock cable system.

 

AIR CONDITIONING

220V Cruisair reverse cycle air conditioning system, comprising of:

1 x 16,000 BTU unit in saloon.

 

WATERMAKER

220V Seafresh 204A AC watermaker - approximately 72 litres per hour with product gauge and remote panel. 

Seafresh automatic freshwater back flush with dedicated pump.

7. TANKAGE AND PLUMBING

 

FUEL

850 litres approximately (187 Imp gallons/224 US gallons) in a GRP tank.

 

WATER

750 litres approximately (165 Imp gallons/198 US gallons) in a GRP tank.

 

TANK TENDER GAUGES

A tank gauge system is installed and linked to all tanks, enabling fuel and water levels in each tank to be maintained.

Backup calibrated dipsticks with calibration chart.

 

HOT WATER 

From an insulated approximately 73 litres (16 Imp gallons/19 US gallons) tank heated by the engine’s heat exchanger, or by thermostatically-controlled 220V, 1.25kW immersion heater element powered by the generator or dockside power.

Each tank is fitted with a thermostatic safety blender valve.

 

PRESSURISED HOT AND COLD WATER SYSTEM

Hot and cold freshwater system based on a high capacity water pump with PEX/PBT pipework and fittings.

Jabsco charcoal water filter system on galley cold water supply.

 

HOLDING TANKS 

Two plastic (Polyethylene) toilet holding tanks installed for each head and plumbed for gravity discharge, with additional ability to pump out from deck using a shore station.

Tanks fitted with electric capacity gauges.

 

GREY WATER

Showers and washbasins discharge into two sump tanks, one forward and one aft, which then evacuate via a dedicated electric Whale ‘Gulper’ pump directly overboard.

The galley sink also empties via an electric Whale ‘Gulper’ pump.

These three pumps are each operated by Vimar rocker switches.

 

MANIFOLD SYSTEM

Bronze manifold for seawater inlets to reduce through-hull fittings.

All batteries are positively secured in case of a knock-down and battery stowage areas are vented by fan assisted ducting to the exterior of the vessel.
